POSITION TITLE: Vivarium Lab Supervisor

LOCATION: Baltimore, MD

REPORTS TO: Laboratory Operations Manager

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: To manage the daily operations, scheduling, training and function of the vivarium laboratory in the TOS, POS, banking and research and development departments. Assist with regulatory and sponsor audits. Perform tasks in the laboratory.


  • Manage the day-to-day activities in the laboratory
  • Track the timeliness and quality of the execution of protocol activities to reduce mistakes and deviations
  • Assist with maintaining quality standards within the lab by review/writing SOPs and overseeing Research Associates and Technicians to ensure that SOPS are executed properly
  • Provide regular updates on TOS and POS studies to internal personnel
  • Provide leadership to all technicians on the execution of daily lab activities including but not limited to data capture, data reporting, study binders, study specific document management, and study scheduling
  • Serve as the lead trainer for Research Associates and Technicians on laboratory techniques, LIMs, SOPs, and lab procedures
  • Assist with regulatory and sponsor audits of the facility and studies
  • Devote time to laboratory tasks including but not limited to lead tech responsibilities and daily laboratory tasks when needed
  • Assist with development of weekend and other Master Schedules
  • Assist with other tasks/duties as need in a small company environment


  • Expertise in small animal handling techniques: dosing routes, injections, necropsy, blood collection, etc
  • Possess an ability to manage timelines and develop schedules for work tasks
  • Understanding of animal welfare and state and federal regulations regarding preclinical studies (AAALAC and OLAW)
  • Ability to interpret and communicate scientific data to internal and external colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and productively in a team-oriented environment while maintaining a strong sense of integrity and confidentiality
  • Possess creative problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound and accurate judgment in making timely decisions
  • Possess superior planning, organizational, computer, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to network and negotiate effectively
  • Ability to be flexible and assist with other tasks/duties as needed in a small company environment
  • Demonstrated accountability and responsibility for own work
  • Ability to observe safety and security procedures


  • BS degree in biology, pharmacology or related field is required
  • Demonstrated experience in in vivo oncology tumor models: animal handling; tumor implantation; tumor measurement; oncology drug administration by IP, IV and by oral gavage; proficient in survival surgery, venipuncture, terminal bleed, and cardiac puncture in immunocompromised mice is required
  • Experience in Project Management is required
  • Knowledge and experience using a Laboratory Information Management system such as Provantis is preferred
  • Minimum 2 years’ of experience in a contract research animal facility devoted to preclinical and/or oncology drug testing


  • Must be able to sit and use hands to finger, handle and feel
  • Must be able to lift and move packages weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time using a computer in a typical office environment in a multi-level facility
  • Some activities require repetitive motion and reaching, pulling or pushing
  • In carrying out the duties of the job there will be frequent exposure to fumes and chemical hazards
  • Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue
