Veterinary Technician / Non-exempt
TITLE AND CLASSIFICATION: Veterinary Technician / Non-exempt Position
REPORTING LOCATION: Rockville, MD
REPORTS TO: Vice President, Global Laboratory Operations
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: Support research studies by providing the highest standard of humane treatment and clinical care for all animals housed within our animal care and use program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct daily rounds to triage and manage treatment of clinical cases.
Coordinate and communicate treatment plans with veterinarian, research personnel, and management.
Manage and conduct the Pathogen Surveillance Monitoring Program.
Manage and conduct the Animal Import and Export Program.
Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, and animal welfare protocols, policies, and procedures.
Identify emerging technical and clinical procedures and treatments.
Draft, review, and revise veterinary-related SOPs and related documents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and understanding of the working of a contract research organization.
Demonstrated ability to perform technical procedures with mice: handling and restraint; compound administration (IP, IV, PO, SC); blood collection.
Knowledge of animal welfare, state, and federal regulations regarding preclinical studies (USDA, OLAW, AAALAC, and CLIA).
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and productively in a team-oriented environment while maintaining a strong sense of integrity and confidentiality.
Creative problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound and accurate judgment in making timely decisions.
Proficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Superior planning, organizational, computer, written and verbal communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
AS/BS/MS degree in veterinary technology, animal sciences, biology, or related field or an equivalent amount of related experience.
1-2 years of directly related experience.
Thorough understanding and comprehension of facts, techniques, nomenclature, equipment, and theories of veterinary sciences as they relate specifically to job performance and function in the laboratory animal research environment.
Demonstrated experience and expertise with mice and rodents required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to sit and use hands to finger, handle and feel.
Must be able to lift and move packages weighing up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to sit for long periods of time using a computer in a typical office environment in a multi-level facility
Some activities require repetitive motion and reaching, pulling or pushing.
In carrying out the duties of the job there will be frequent exposure to fumes and chemical hazards.
Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.
