Supervisor Necropsy

TITLE AND CLASSIFICATION:  Supervisor, Necropsy Services / Exempt Position

REPORTING LOCATION: Rockville, MD

REPORTS TO: Senior Manager, Laboratory Operations

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: Support in vivo oncology studies in mice as the Supervisor of the Necropsy Services Team. Direct daily activities of team members

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operational responsibility for the development and management of Necropsy services
  • Provides the oversight and leadership of technical procedures conducted post-life
  • Schedules work within the department and manages overtime
  • Assists with the selection, recruitment and appraisal of staff within the department and contributes to the development and completion of the departments primary objectives
  • Review and approve study protocols
  • Represent Necropsy Services at study protocol meetings
  • Provides training, technical guidance and mentoring of team members
  • Acts as primary point of contact in matters pertaining to Necropsy Services
  • Liaise with cross-functional groups, different departments, and Project Leadership to facilitate and maximize performance associated with specific studies
  • Provides the leadership and processes necessary to focus the department’s efforts towards improving productivity, quality of work and the welfare of animals
  • Conduct gross and complex necropsies including sample and lesion description
  • Oversees all shipment of samples to sponsors and diagnostic laboratories
  • Reviews study data in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Record data using laboratory information management systems
  • Prepares and implements new SOP’s, and reviews and revises existing procedures

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with preclinical in vivo pharmacology or oncology studies in mice
  • Technical in vivo and data analysis skills
  • Ability to work effectively and productively in a team-oriented environment while maintaining a strong sense of accountability, integrity and confidentiality.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound and accurate judgment in making timely decisions.
  • Superior planning, organizational, computer, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to assist with other duties in a dynamic environment
  • Understanding of animal welfare and clinical testing regulations and standards (e.g. AAALAC, CLIA)
  • Ability to observe safety and security procedures

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BS degree in biology, pharmacology, or related field, or minimum or 5 years of related experience
  • Minimum or 2 years supervisory or management experience
  • Experience in contract research animal facility or industry setting is preferred
  • AALAS certification required (LAT or preferably LATG)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be able to sit and use hands to finger, handle and feel
  • Must be able to lift and move packages weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time using a computer in a typical office environment in a multi-level facility
  • Some activities require repetitive motion and reaching, pulling or pushing
  • In carrying out the duties of the job there will be frequent exposure to fumes and chemical hazards
  • Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue
