REPORTS TO: Vice President of Pharmacology

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:

The Project Leader of Research and Development serves as the primary point of contact for internal R&D and special project management. This position will be critical to advance the ongoing efforts in building and characterizing the Champions TumorBank, managing pilot projects to validate new offerings, assist in the commercialization of new products and platforms including but not limited to Syngeneic, ImmunograftsTM and AML platforms. This position also involves animal model selection to pair with specific tumor types to facilitate building new PDX models and is ultimately responsible for project design, oversight and internal reporting of results. Essential job duties include discussions with internal Champions teams across multiple departments to design and oversee internal R&D projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong general scientific background, a high level of initiative and strong organizational skills to be able to successfully manage multiple projects at one time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of project management and oncology research. Knowledge of in vivo oncology models (Xenograft/PDX/CDX) required. Understanding of preclinical drug development a plus.
  • General scientific knowledge of mouse models in preclinical cancer research.
  • Scientific expertise in molecular biology techniques including those associated with PCR, IHC and cell culture.
  • Experience with analyzing flow cytometry data a plus.
  • Experience in a Project Leadership/Management desirable.
  • Requires internal customer service skills, timely decision making, good interpersonal skills and an ability to be persistent while maintaining tact.
  • Must have the ability to balance several priorities simultaneously with high attention to detail.
  • Ability for frequent adaptation, self-organization, accountability.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Statistical Software such as GraphPad Prism.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ph.D. degree in chemical/biological science or project management preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in knowledge, skills and abilities areas listed in the above.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Project Leader of R&D has primary responsibilities including overseeing all assigned sub-projects and associated operations for a wide range of R&D efforts at a high level of independence.
  • Interfaces with Business Development, Clinical Operations, Laboratory Operations and other Champions personnel to successfully coordinate projects from start to finish.
  • Responsible for managing production and inventory control of specialized models including humanized mice and mice harboring AML.
  • Responsible for planning and scheduling projects in collaboration with laboratory operations.
  • Serves as the technical expert for internal colleagues to explain the scientific/technical details of ongoing projects and their potential applications in pre-clinical and translational research.
  • Serves as PI on R&D IACUC protocols.
  • Defines scientific requirements and develops study design and new protocols according to IACUC guidelines and operational ability.
  • Recommends tumor model selection based on needs and availability; suggests replacements when necessary.
  • Prepares internal SOWs for proposed pilot work for internal review and approval. Translates approved SOWs into internal lab protocols.
  • Reviews drug formulation documents and ensures all necessary test agents and standards of care are in stock prior to study initiation.
  • Organizes kickoff and protocol review meetings with internal staff.
  • Monitors ongoing study data and other data to ensure tasks are being completed accurately and in a timely manner and communicates updates regularly to internal groups.
  • Issues directives to the lab based on data and protocol endpoints.
  • Performs data and statistical analysis of data at completion of projects where appropriate.
  • Identifies and provides resolution to problems involving ongoing projects.
  • Participates and provides feedback in team meetings.
  • Identifies potential new opportunities and facilitates ongoing discussions regarding new opportunities with existing platforms and offerings.
  • Deliver value in a timely manner, and ensure protocols/documentation/data are accurate.
  • Works independently and performs other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • In carrying out the duties of the job there will be some exposure to fumes and chemical hazards.
  • Duties performed occasionally require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.
  • Must be able to lift and move packages weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time using a computer in a typical office environment in a multi-level facility.
